Global Consequences of Deforestation

The conversion of forests into agricultural land is a big reason for deforestation

1. Climatic change : A shift in climatic belts is being felt all over the world as a result of deforestation. The summers are becoming hotter and rainfall in many parts is deficient.

2. Desertification : Deforestation leaves the soil naked and leads to soil erosion. Due to this, the soil becomes less fertile and, at times, the lower rocky layers are exposed. This leads to the formation of deserts.

3. Ozone depletion : Certain greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide accumulate earth’s atmosphere due to deforestation. These gases destroy the ozone that forms a protective shield in the form of the ozone layer present in the stratosphere.

4. Loss of biodiversity : Deforestation leads to loss of biodiversity. If we go on cutting trees, the natural habitats of many animals will get completely destroyed.

5. Loss of habitat : Deforestation also destroys the habitat of many wild animals. The habitat of an animal provides shelter, food and protection to animals. If the habitat of an animal is distrubed then it will force the animals to go other places in search of food and shelter.

6. Soil erosion : Deforestation increases soil erosion. Roots of plants hold soil particles together. In the absence of plants, the top layer of the soil will be easily removed by the action of high speed winds or water flow.

7. Disruption of the water cycle :  Trees plays an important role in maintaining the water cycle. They draw up water via their roots, which are then released into the atmosphere. A large part of the water that circulates in the ecosystem of rainforests remains inside the plants.
